Building on the foundations laid by the original SMARTSTEP, the new generation of step is an innovative one-piece design featuring click-to-rise technology. Lightweight and durable, it’s easy to use and easy to store. It feels smooth, soft, and stable – so users can train with comfort, confidence, and power.
We were challenged with this project to identify how we could improve the experience and efficiency of the current design. Following an extensive process of reviewing competitors in the market, mapping out pain points and opportunities and discussing the current product with clubs, instructors and users we were confident we could provide an innovative product that built upon the foundations laid by the original SMARTSTEP.
We identified several key areas for improvement while conducting focus groups and user testing. These were; an intuitive and easy height adjustment, confidence in use, and storage of the step both in clubs and in homes.
Throughout the development process we needed to ensure that any change we made was not just for aesthetics but also benefited the user, without compromising the strength or life expectancy of the product. Working with a team of physios, trainers, bio-mechanic specialists and computer simulation experts we were able to provide a product that was easier to use, provided more muscle activity for users, and used 15% less plastic.
We developed numerous concepts and prototypes before landing on the click-to-rise functionality. What the click-to-rise mechanism achieves is a minimum force from the user to disengage the integrated risers, while providing maximum retention force, and a reassuring audible ‘click’ once the riser is fully engaged.
The SMARTSTEP is an evolution of a trusted and loved product. We’ve started with the original design, and improved its useability, functionality and efficiency to provide an enhanced experience for users.
